Fire Instructor Certification – NEW Format

Online Coursework: September 11 - October 8, 2023  For qualified firefighters who wish to complete their instructor certification with a combination of concentrated class work and online learning.

In Classroom At BGSU: October 9-12  Monday - Thursday  8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Option 1 Test Date at BGSU: Wednesday, October 11 @ 5:00 pm
Option 2 Test Date at BGSU: Thursday, October 12 @ 8:00 am 
Class on Thursday - 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

Students will be in the classroom 4 days and online for the remainder of the class. You will learn the principles of adult learning, communication, instructional methods, lesson plan development, assessment, NFPA 1403 Awareness, and all other components of the ODPS Instructor Course core curriculum.
**A separate NFPA 1403 course will be added at a later date for certified instructors who will teach live fire evolutions.

Special Requirements
Candidates must hold a valid certificate to practice as a firefighter issued under section 4765.55 of the Ohio Revised Code; in the preceding seven years, have at least five years of experience as a certified firefighter; pass (80%) the written Firefighter Knowledge examination approved by the Ohio Department of Public Safety/Division of EMS Executive Director (OAC 4765-21-02). Firefighter II exam results (80% or better and taken within the past 12 months) may substitute for the fire knowledge exam (call for more information). Please schedule the exam at least 14 days prior to the start of the class. 
*You must submit your completed Knowledge exam results or you will be removed from the class and placed on a waitlist. Please fax results to 419-372-1631.
The online section of this class is flexible, but you must meet assignment deadlines each week.
 
Required Textbook
You must purchase and bring the IFSTA Fire and Emergency Services Instructor (9th edition - 2019). Publisher: Fire Protection Publications.
Self-study guide is optional, but recommended.
